After preparing some lost wax moulds in the studio now is the time to put everything in the van and travel to Coles Casting in Dorset. A team of peers and specialists meet me there and the goal of the first experiment is to test which methodology of casting is the most suitable for this new molten material. We focused on casting a sphere, a simple shape which would theoretically cool evenly. We made three C02 sand moulds, two oil bonded sand mould, three ceramic shell moulds and three ludo moulds. An special annealing kiln was fabricated to counteract thermal shock and encourage crystals to grow within the rock.
